While the Enterprise is iconic and much loved, and the scene with the newly rebuilt Enterprise at the end is hard to watch without getting emotional, it is refreshing to have a completely different ship for the bulk of the film. For a start I love how we pick up right where we left off last time, the Enterprise is still gone, Kirk and the crew are still wanted by the Federation, it’s nice to have that sense of continuity. I’ll admit, I don’t really care for time travel in Star Trek nor do I like eco-friendly movies given that they almost always end on a note that suggests things will get better, but I can tolerate both of these things here given that the bulk of the movie is just so good as well as the fact that apparently the film genuinely did do a lot to help whale conservation. There is so much to love about Star Trek IV: The Journey Home. Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the rest of the officers travel back in time to retrieve now-extinct humpback whales, which Spock has deduced will communicate with the probe and send it away from Earth. Living in exile on the planet Vulcan, the ragtag former crew of the USS Enterprise steal a star ship after receiving a planetary distress call from Earth: a space probe has entered into orbit around Earth, disabled global power on the planet and evaporated the oceans. So, will this more lighthearted approach to Star Trek be a hit or a miss? While most of Star Trek focused on space adventures and life in the 23 rd century, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home brings thing back to Earth in a decidedly comedic way. With three Star Trek films under our belt, it’s time to move onto the fourth of the six films.
